Day tour of New Mexico Tech’s Magdalena Ridge Observatory

Guests will meet at Water Canyon at the base of the Magdalena Mountains, then be shuttled up to the Observatory at 10,600 feet. The events include a presentation on the history of the Observatory, tours of the 2.4m Telescope and Optical/Infrared Interferometer, and solar observing (weather permitting).

The 2.4m Telescope is primarily utilized to observe, track, and characterize solar system astronomical targets, artificial Earth satellites, space vehicles, and terrestrial military targets.

The Optical/Infrared Interferometer, which is currently under construction, will produce images of faint and complex astronomical targets at resolutions over 100 times that of the Hubble Space Telescope. Once completed, the MRO Interferometer will be the most powerful telescope in the world.

Schedule:

10:00 AM Shuttles depart Water Canyon (35 minute drive to the Observatory)

11:00 – 12:00 Welcome and introductions by MRO Program Director fan Payne

12:00 – 1:00 2.4m Telescope Tour by Eileen and Bill Ryan

Interferometer tour by Michelle Creech-Eakman

1:00 – 1:30 Solar observing (weather permitting)

1:30 – 2:30 2.4m Telescope Tour by Eileen and Bill Ryan

Interferometer tour by Michelle Creech-Eakman

2:30 – 3:00 Closing presentation by Colleen Gino

3:00 PM Shuttles depart the Observatory

Please note: Guests will be required to sign a liability waiver before traveling up to the Observatory. The tour is not suitable for children under the age of 11. Because the Observatory is situated on relatively rough terrain and some parts of the facility are currently under construction, the tour is not ADA accessible.
